Ashburton scores exclusive junior NPL License

NPL graphic from FB 1In great news for junior boy’s football in Boroondara, Ashburton United Soccer Club (AUSC) has been granted one of 12 new junior National Premier League (NPL) licenses from Football Victoria.

Ashburton is the only club in Boroondara to receive a junior NPL license. The license enables Ashburton to enter NPL teams in the under 13, 14, 15 and 16 age groups as part of the top level junior competition in the state.

“We are absolutely thrilled that Ashburton has been awarded the new junior NPL license as it gives local soccer players an opportunity to play football at the elite level in their local area,” said Bob Stensholt, President of AUSC.

“The license is a tremendous endorsement of our club and the work that we have done in the football community over many years,” Bob added.

This year Ashburton is celebrating its 40 year anniversary. Formed through the Ashburton Baptist Church in 1979, the club started with just one junior team. Today, Ashburton is one of the biggest soccer clubs in the state. It has 800 members with 65 teams, including MiniRoos, junior boys and girls, senior mens and womens, veterans, an All Abilities team, a Soccer Mums program and an indoor futsal league.

“Our new junior NPL license forms part of the Ashy Way, which is our club philosophy that is designed to give as many community members as possible the chance to play football at any level, and at any age,” Bob said.

"We will still run our community teams which are the foundation of our club, however the new junior NPL license gives us the ability to meet the needs of aspiring younger players."

“The popularity and growth of football in Boroondara has been phenomenal over the years, but until now our most talented juniors have had to find clubs outside the area if they wanted to develop their game at the highest level. Now, with our new junior NPL license, we can offer an elite pathway in the local community. Hopefully we can even play our part in developing a future Socceroo!”

Ashburton will conduct player trials in coming months as it prepares to enter four junior NPL teams from under 13 to under 16 in the 2020 season. If anyone is interested in registering for the trials or would like more information about the club, then they should contact
